The Arrival

Today’s recommendation comes from Nicola Richardson. Knowing Nicola is a bit of a book worm I immediately thought to ask her to contribute. She

told me upon being asked she ran around her house picking up loads of books until finally arriving at about fifteen!

Nicola is part of the creative collection, Changing Cultures. They work in the cultural, creative and education sectors. They do exactly what it says on the tin. They take creative approaches to changing cultures within individuals and organisations.

As Nicola found selecting one book a challenge I asked her what made her select The Arrival by Shaun Tan.

“There are a number of reasons why I chose this book. Firstly, it is beautiful. Shaun Tan is a master of illustrations and all his books made my shortlist. Picture books for adults are a bit of a rarity, but I don’t know why. A picture tells a thousand stories and this couldn’t be more true of this book.”

Intrigued, I asked her what it is about.

“It tells a recognisable story of one man wanting to make a better life for his family and the challenges he faces moving somewhere new.”

Why would you recommend this book?

“Every person and culture can relate and understand the story. The illustrations are other worldly and the complexities of life unfold with each page. The absence of words removes any language barriers to enjoying this book.”
